Building something out of nothing

I've been away for awhile. I graduated from college, I moved to across the country, I started a Tumblr.

I'll be paying more attention to this space and, eventually, to my shop, which has been empty for too long. 

P.S. This is a blatant and loving re-creation of Giant Dwarf's excellent Starlette Crown. I didn't have the scratch for a real one, but I did have some glitter and determination.

I've abandoned this poor space for too long.
I became a full-time student again (a print journalism major). Education, for all its importance, is also one hell of a time-suck.
The time I would have spent on projects now goes to frantic homework-doing.
However, I've been bookmarking bits of this and that from across the internet - tutorials, brilliant ideas, inspirations, patterns - and I'd thought I'd share them all as a "welcome back, here's the stuff I would have liked to have been doing while I was writing papers instead."

An old trip in pictures

These are polaroids from our 2005 trip to Tennessee. I got them out the other day and fondly remembered that microwave, the one that broke and that the trash men in Minnesota wouldn't take away. We carried it with us to Tennessee, allowing it to see some of the countryside, where it was eventually picked up by less choosy garbage men in front of Joshua's parents' house. I took a picture to commemorate it and all the macaroni and cheese it warmed up in its lifetime.

Our favorite picture though, was "Lost English, Reward Bulldog"

Out in the world

Me and my books are being featured for the month of April at my beloved Electric Fetus. See the entire MinnEconomy feature here: whee!

The above picture is of a no longer visible wall on the side of the fetus building. This picture was taken shortly after the adjoining building was demolished. I loved the brief view into the paint colors of a previously interior wall, suddenly exposed for all of Superior St. to see. A new building has since taken up the spot.

Birthday-ing

Today is my birthday, the big two four. I am probably around seven years old in this picture, playing dress up with my cousin Kristen (in the jaunty leopard number) and I think I look appropriately celebratory. This picture also proves my lifelong love of large purses.

Home again home again

I had a lovely, slushy trip north to Duluth to see friends + family and generally ate/drank/giggled too much the whole time. My sister and I seem to be prone to giggling at our own jokes. We think we are very, very funny. "EPOXY," she turned to me and said once, reverentially, "it's god's glue."



I also built a tiny wooden car for a pinewood derby:



I named her Gertrude (she's the white one with the red stripe) and she got third place overall. I was pretty tickled about the whole thing. Yes, the car in the back is a sandwich.







My birthday twin Nyssa June and I are happy from all our derby-ing.




Now that I am reunited with my workspace, I'm planning for a shop update with more animals + goodies soon.

After a morning full of irritating bureaucratic phone calls that may or may not have accomplished anything at all (probably the latter), I took myself out to the yard with my trusty polaroid joycam camera (sadly discontinued years ago) and some of the (also discontinued) film for it that Joshua got for my last birthday. I feel a little better now, and maybe with another cup of coffee and some lunch this day can be salvaged after all.

This is Frances. The poor thing gets a bum rap because I've had him so long now that it's more like living with a furry, disapproving roommate than having a pet.

He's really a very nice cat.

But this post was really supposed to be about how I'm going to New Mexico for a few days to attend a wedding. Whee!

Corners of my home: the sewing room. The shelves were originally built to live in the also lettuce-colored bathroom at our last house, the notions/thread storage is a repurposed tackle box, the print is a piece of estate sale fabric stretched over a board. The lady by the lamp is my Visible Woman, a 1960's era anatomy model I assembled a few years ago.


Favorite thing in room: matching pony boy cap guns, because I am secretly a gunslinger.
